Oxidation and production of free radicals is a strong tool in cancer treatments. As tissue light penetration increases with wavelength, the treatment should address agents absorbing deep RED, such as chlorins, bacteriochlorins, and phthalocyanines. Addressing these agents allows improvement in tumour control. Especially, due to accelerated metabolism of fast growing tumour cells these agents automatically will be transported to the target area.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;130px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A solution for this treatment ideally should have high absorption range between 600 nm to 800 nm to ensure a high tissue penetration depth. In figure 1a (left side) the absorption spectra of protoporphyrin IX (short PPIX) is depicted, which is highly present in living organisms, and it has a strong absorption around 405 nm with a strong declining abs. value towards 450 nm. The excitation probability is almost negligible for wavelength longer than 600 nm, especially compared to its main abs. peak (405 nm). Figure 1b (right side) illustrates the oxyhemoglobin (HbO<sub>2<\/sub>) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) absorption spectrum in the visible and it clearly can be retrieved that the cut-off wavelength is around 600 nm.
